چکیده

This paper investigates the influence of critical raindrop diameters on the specific rain attenuation in Durban (29◦52′S, 30◦58′E), South Africa. The total rainfall attenuation is evaluated by integrating over all the raindrop sizes and the differential change in the attenuation is observed over a given range of drop size diameters. The major contribution to the specific attenuation for the drop size distribution (DSD) models considered is created by the raindrop diameters not exceeding 2 mm especially at higher frequencies. The three parameter lognormal and gamma distribution models are employed for the purpose of analysis. For the DSD models considered in this work, the total percentage fraction created by raindrops in the diameter range 0.5mm ≤ D ≤ 2.5mm and 1mm ≤ D ≤ 3mm to the total specific attenuation is found to be critical for the overall and seasonal rainfall attenuation at 2.5GHz– 100GHz in Durban. It is observed that the total specific attenuation increases with increased frequencies and a higher rainfall rate produces high rain attenuation. In this paper, both the overall and seasonal values of R0.01 determined for Durban are used.

Extreme wet years over southern Africa: Role of Indian Ocean sea surface temperatures

[1] Southern Africa is a predominantly semiarid region with a high degree of interannual rainfall variability. Although much of the recent climate research has focused on the causes of drought events, the region has also experienced extremes of above average rainfall, the most recent examples being the major flooding episodes that devastated Mozambique during 2000 and 2001. This paper investiga...

Rainfall reductions over Southern Hemisphere semi-arid regions: the role of subtropical dry zone expansion

Since the late 1970s, Southern Hemisphere semi-arid regions such as southern-coastal Chile, southern Africa, and southeastern Australia have experienced a drying trend in austral autumn, predominantly during April and May. The rainfall reduction coincides with a poleward expansion of the tropical belt and subtropical dry zone by around 2°-3° in the same season. This has raised questions as to w...

An evaluation of the potential use of satellite rainfall data for input to water resource estimation models in southern Africa

Global or near global satellite rainfall data are becoming readily available and have the potential to provide the rainfall data inputs required for water resource availability modelling in the face of shrinking ground-based networks. However, the difficulties of using both sets of rainfall data in models with existing calibrations based on raingauge data are not well understood. An assessment ...

Multichannel filtering for color image processing

This paper addresses the problem of noise attenu-ation for multichannel data, such as color images. The proposed filter utilizes adaptive data dependent non-parametric techniques. Simulation results indicate that the new filter suppresses impulsive as well as Gaussian noise and preserves edges and details.

The Study of the Impact of Temperature and Wind In the Southern Low Pressure Systems

This research aims to study the impact of temperature and wind in the southern low-pressure system and its associated precipitation in the southern regions of Iran. As The southern low pressure system moves eastward, it crosses the southern regions of Iran, causing medium and heavy rainfall in these areas. In this study, two southern low-pressure systems that caused heavy rainfall on March 11, ...
